![]() However here is MY biggest factor and that is what I start with. I have read up on a few oiling out posts and have tried oiling out some of the paintings I did earlier with some good success however there is a few painting that took a lot of layers to finish and these require a few more oiling out sessions (but that makes sense to me, as there is more depth and barriers for the oil to penetrate right ?) However if I treat the canvas to a light covering of oil before I start, I get a glossy finish and it seems to retain this once dried (a few months so far and still looking good). If I paint onto acrylic gesso canvas with minimal medium used (I mix 1 or 2 drops into the paint on the pallette) I get a mat finish and it looks a little darker (pretty sure this is refraction working here to make it look darker ?) I use only winton oils & refined linseed oil and this has been my learning & understanding with the help of many topics on this forum : Right anyway I am new to drawing and painting myself (started in May this year for the first time ever) and have had similar results to you. dont give up … the first time you picked up a pencil did you draw the most amazing drawing ? not likely and I guess it was a stick tree or an egg shaped ball or something, it took time to get good right ? all the lessons you learnt that help you get better and better to start producing drawings you loved ? keep going there is so much to learn and fun to be had along the way.
